For khichadi

30gms masoor dal
45gms rice(you can use any, I used basmati)

A pinch of turmeric

  • Wash and rinse the dal and rice
In a vessel put them both and add sufficient water and turmeric.
Use the double boil method and put the vessel in pressure cooker and cook till done.
It takes about five pressures to be done well.
Let the cooker cool down before you remove the vessel from it.
    This will ensure longer steaming.

  • In a pan add ten gms of ghee.
Add the tempering of cumin, methi, mustard seeds, peppercorns.
Once they splutter add in the chopped half onion, green chillies and garlic.
    Fry till pink in colour.
Add the turmeric and coriander powder.
    Mix well
    Add the vegetable mix.
    Mix well.
    Add salt to taste.
    Cover and cook.

  • Once done, you can remove the khichadi from the cooker into  a bowl. Add salt and mix well. Add in 2 gms of ghee to top it off.
